"An Intimate Interview"

Jim Bray - 16 Magazine - July 1980Is Jim Bray Your Real Name? - It's James Bray, really, and my middle name is Mickeal (Yes, it's spelled like that!) Everyone calls me Jimmy, though!

Where and when were you born? - In Upland, California on February 23, 1961--I'm 19 now.

Do you still live there? - Nearby--I share a house with my mom Sandy in Ontario, Cal.--it has plenty of antiques, fruit trees, and friendly neighbors! I also have an apartment in Hollywood with a pool, tennis court, whirlpool, and sauna right in the building and I've got a cottage right on the beach in Newport!

Sounds terrific--do you swim a lot? -  Sure do, and I love to water ski and surf! In fact, I like all sports, not only roller skating--I play tennis, football, golf, baseball, and basketball, too! I also run in the mornings and work out with weights, but most of all I love to dance.

No wonder you're so slim! How tall are you and how much do you weigh? - I'm 5'11 and weigh 145lbs. -- I can pretty much eat anything without gaining.

What foods do you like best? - Anything Italian, Romanian, or Chinese--I like burgers, pizza, and seafood, too.

Can you cook? - I can handle lasagna and spaghetti, but I like going out for a nice, cozy dinner.

What else do you like to do on a date? - See a great movie, have a sunset beach barbecue or take a romantic drive--I know a great disco up in the mountains with a spectacular view! And there's always skating, of course!

Do you have a dream girl? - You bet--she's warm, generous, shelf-assured, and feels terrific about herself and he life--she has a lot of pride in her appearance, she's active, and has lots of interests that she loves to share with me!

Do you want to get married? - I hope to, when I meet the right girl! I love kids and would like to have at least two.

Do you come from a big family? - No, I'm an only child. Since my dad died it's just me and my mom--we're very close.

Do you have any pets - I just got a white Samoyed puppy for my birthday--his name is "Pepsi"! Of course I still have "Buckwheat" the raccoon and two cats "Bogart" and "Flash."

How about a favorite color? - I love blue and green. My eyes are a mixture of those colors and people say I look best in them.

What's your most prized possession? - My wheels--the ones on my skates and my car! I've a new black Fiat X19 with a gold interior and I love it!

How long have you been skating, Jim? - 13 years. I was really terrible when I first started but I loved it and kept practicing.  I rented skates, took lessons, and soon I fulfilled my dream--I became the roller skating champ of the US!

How did you get the part of Bobby James in Roller Boogie? - The producers spotted me in a skating magazine and I was asked to do a screen test--before I knew it I was in my first movie! It was quite a thrill--I acted in school plays and did some catalogue modeling when I was nine or ten, but nothing prepared me for this! I'm quick learner, though, and everyone helped me out!

What was it like on the set?- One big, crazy family--it was great! My movie pals Jimmy Van Patten, Albert Insinnia, and Stoney Jackson are still my good friends--we skate, surf, and ski together a lot! Working with Linda Blair was wonderful--I taught he how to skate and she taught me to horseback ride.

Will you be making any more movies? - After I finish the album I'm working on and my TV series Roll Out! I was in a rock band about five years ago but I gave it up to skate--now I'll be signing and skating on the show! The album will be out this summer and the series will be on then, too--so will the commercial I've done for Wrangler jeans, if it hasn't appeared already!

What kind of music do you like most? - Rock n' Roll--I like Supertramp, Led Zeppelin, The Cars, and Elvis Presley, but I really got into disco when I'm on the dance floor.

Will you skate in competitions any more? - I always dreamed of being in the Olympics but I don't know if that's possible now. I'd like to start and skate in a professional roller show one day and build lots or rinks so kids everywhere can learn to skate.

Have you ever been injured while skating? - Not seriously. I once broke my ankle, but mostly I get bruised elbows and knees--and not that often. I've been pretty lucky!

Do you have a lucky charm - Lots of em'. I have a sapphire ring and a gold money clip (a gift from my friend's grandfather), and I wear several charms on a chain around my neck. I have a lightning bolt, a winged skate, an Italian horn, and a rabbit--I'm always looking for more to add to my collection!

What other thinks for you like to buy? - Sporting equipment, clothes, shoes, and souvenirs when I travel, but I'd rather pick out surprises for other people. I like to buy flowers or perfume for my mom and other special ladies I know.

Do people ever surprise you with gifts? - You bet! Besides my dog, I got great things for my birthday, like a new wet suit, golf clubs, and membership in a racquet club, but the best surprises came from fans. I received enough scary books to keep me in chills all year and some beautiful new charms--I got some beautiful handmade things with my name on them, too.

Do you travel a lot? - As much as I can. I've been to France, Sweden, and Japan for the premieres of Roller Boogie and I've traveled all over the U.S.--I had an especially good time in New York. I love to go skiing in Colorado and I hope to visit Italy and Romania some day!

Are you afraid of anything - Dark alleys and haunted houses, like the one in The Amityville Horror!

What makes you laugh? - Watching Robin Williams, Peter Sellers, Steve Martin, and the Saturday Night Live gang makes me crack up, but reading my fan mail makes me smile and feel good all over--the letters are terrific.

Where can 16 readers write to you? - XXX Tell'em to include a picture and a phone number--I may just call to say "hi!"
